Step-by-Step Embroidery Walkthrough: How We Bring Your Designs to Life

Embroidery has long been one of the most trusted and classic methods for adding custom designs to apparel for decades. From creating professional logos on golf polos to adding personality to hats and jackets, embroidery offers high-quality, long-lasting branding and customization on clothing. But how does this process work? In this blog, we’ll take you through our step-by-step walkthrough of the embroidery process, oh how your artwork transforms from a digital file into a stitched design that will make a lasting impression.

Step 1: Preparing Your Design for Embroidery (Digitizing)

Before we can begin embroidering a design, a piece of artwork needs to be “digitized” and converted into embroidery stitching format by software. This process converts your artwork into a file format that our professional-grade Tajima embroidery machines can read and stitch into a garment. Digitizing is a key step because it breaks down your design into stitch patterns, determining the type of stitch, its direction, and its sequence.

Why It Matters:

Digitizing ensures that your design is optimized for embroidery and the layers of stitching are performed in the right order for a high quality finish. Since embroidery uses thread, some intricate details or very small elements might need to be simplified to achieve the best results.

What You Need to Know:

At Stay Golden Custom, we offer free digitizing for orders of 6 or more pieces, making it easy to get started without extra setup costs. Our embroidery department uses professional grade software to make sure that a file is digitized correctly for a high quality crest every time.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Garment for Embroidery

Not all fabrics are best suited for embroidery. Heavier fabrics like fleece, jackets, and hats are well-suited for embroidery, as they provide a sturdy foundation for the stitching. Certain fabrics like the knit used in winter toques and beanies can only be decorated by embroidery rather than printing. On the other hand, thin, lightweight fabrics like t-shirts may not be the best option, as the stitching can cause the fabric to pucker or feel bulky. We have a wide range of options of brands and products to choose from that cater to your needs, click here to see our full product listing.

Best Choices for Embroidery:

Ball caps, toques, beanies,  jackets, hoodies, and other fleece garments are some of the most popular items for embroidery. Their fabric offers the weight and thickness that allows embroidered designs to stand out without compromising the garment's integrity.

Considerations & Limitations:

Keep in mind that embroidery works best for logos and designs that are bold and simple, without too much fine detail. This helps ensure that the design comes out crisp and clear. Small details and lettering may be lost due to the limitations of the thread used for stitching.

Thin fabrics like t-shirts, dry fits and some polos may cause “puckering” for solid embroidery designs as the fabric is much thinner than the design after it is stitched. We recommend printing for light fabrics rather than embroidery.

Step 3: Setting Up the Embroidery Machines

Once your design has been digitized and the garments have arrived from our suppliers, it’s time to set up the file on our embroidery machines. At Stay Golden Custom, we use state of the art Tajima embroidery machines, which are known worldwide for their precision and quality.

What Happens Here:

Your garment is carefully “hooped” into place to ensure the design is positioned correctly. The machine then begins stitching the design into the fabric, following the programmed pattern in the digitized file, thread by thread, to bring your design to life.

Professional-Grade Threads:

We use high-quality Isacord and Robinson-Anton threads, which are durable, vibrant, and designed to stand the test of time. This ensures that your embroidered design will look great for years to come.

Step 4: Backing for Stability

To ensure your embroidered design holds up over time, we apply a fabric style backing to the inside of the garment. This backing adds stability to the stitches, preventing them from pulling or unraveling over time.

Why It Matters:

The backing is key to ensuring your embroidered design remains intact, even after multiple washes. It keeps the design tight and prevents it from becoming damaged overtime.

Step 5: The Embroidery Process in Action

As our machines work their magic, your design is stitched onto the garment. Depending on the complexity and size of the design, the embroidery process can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour per garment. The larger and more intricate the design, the higher the stitch count, which impacts both time and cost. We offer embroidery of up to 2.25x2.25” on hats and 4x4” on other garments.

Cost Considerations:

The cost of embroidery is largely determined by the stitch count, which is based on the size and detail of your design. Our entry level embroidery pricing at Stay Golden Custom is based on up to 10,000 stitches within a design. For larger or more intricate designs, there may be an additional cost.

Step 6: Final Touches and Quality Check

Once the embroidery stitching is complete, we inspect the garment for any loose threads or imperfections. Our embroidery team takes great care in trimming any excess threads, removing excess backing, and packing the garment for delivery.

 Attention to Detail:

Our quality control process ensures that each embroidered design looks sharp and professional. Every item is checked for accuracy and consistency before it leaves our facility. To hear what our previous clients think about our work visit our reviews here.
