Direct to Garment Printing

Direct to garment printing allows us to print designs with hundreds of colours. This is a major difference in comparison to screenprinting and traditional print methods. Direct to garment is a good process for printing designs with a lot of shades that can be challenging to reproduce through colour separation in screen printing.

Direct to garment printing automates much of the pre-production process and removes some of the costly setup associated with preparing a design for screenprinting. This allows us to print as few as one t-shirt with your own custom design. As long as we are provided with a high resolution JPEG or PNG file (minimum 150 PPI at desired print size), a shirt can be printed as a single one off! Learn more about our products available as single one offs here.

Direct to garment printing works best with 100% cotton garments or those with a high percentage cotton construction (ideally at least 75%). This is because the water based ink adheres best to cotton's natural fibres. Some poly/cotton blends can still produce good prints, but we recommend 100% cotton for the best results. For more information on this, see the fabric section below.

As the most recent addition to our suite of decorating methods, our Direct to Garment printing offers top-tier print quality with super vibrant colours and durability. Stay Golden Custom was excited to be one of the first shops to introduce direct to garment printing technology to Atlantic Canada in 2018.

In direct to garment printing, printing equipment directly applies ink onto a t-shirt with its duel White/CMYK print heads. DTG uses environmentally friendly, water-based inks, which are absorbed by the fibers of the garment, leaving a very soft, smooth feel to the shirt. This means that we can print large designs on soft, light t-shirts without the final product feeling too heavy or uncomfortable to wear, as plastisol oil based screenprinting can cause.

DTG printing is ultra precise and high resolution, so you’re able to print images in much higher detail than traditional screen printig, and clients are not limited in the number of colours or shades that can be used.

DTG is also a great option for those who don’t have a  large budget to make an up-front investment for a large order of garments as there are lower minimum order quantities. For classic black and white t-shirts, we offer as few as one custom printed shirt per order. Although the more you order, the more of a bulk discount we can include for you! Ordering over 6 pieces will also get you access to our wholesale program and discounts.

Our Direct to Garment printing equipment at Stay Golden Custom is equipped to handle highly complex and multicoloured orders, skipping the costly and time consuming process of colour separation and screen preparation that screen printing entails.

Direct to Garment is perfect for highly detailed designs and comes highly recommended by our team if you’re looking for a great, long-lasting print.  Check out the videos below to see how the process works and for details on the differences btween direct to garment printing and versus traditional screenprinting.

This printing process is most suited for garments that are 100% ring spun cotton. If you are aiming to achieve the most crisp, bright and opaque look for your design, we recommend sticking with 100% cotton. This fabric usually leads the the best final print due to its tight weave. There can be exceptions to this as some cotton garments (especially fleece) are much thicker and absorb the ink and results in a more faded and vintage look.
